Nice weather. We found Japs and they found us. Our planes and task group shot down 82 enemy planes. Bunker Hill and Wasp had slight damage by dive bombers. We have been at battle stations all day. We shot down 8 planes. All total estimated 300 enemy planes destroyed. We sank 2 tankers and one carrier.
Open in the diary →Went to GQ at 2230 this morning. Bogie was shot down by CAP. Later on Bunker Hill was seriously hit about 23:00, burned badly. She was hit by two suicides. I went swimming to help pick up survivors. We have about 100 survivors aboard. The smile the survivors gave us will be something to always remember.
Open in the diary →We were assigned to take the Bunker Hill back to the tanker group. Upon arrival transferred injured men to hospital ship “Bountiful.” The nurses sure looked swell.
